Extreme Sports Tournaments: Ice Climbing World Cup – Kirov, Russia
While rock climbing might be more popular, ice climbing is no less extreme – and in some cases, might even be more so. Try racing up a sheet of ice with only the help of two ice picks and spikes on your shoes. While this might seem utterly batty as a sport, the athletes are more like acrobats with slick maneuvers as they quickly race to the top of the lice, and then back to the bottom.
Racing up a sheer ice wall with nothing but two ice picks in your hands and the spikes on your shoes might seem inconceivable to most, but to the participants of the 2012 Ice Climbing World Cup, it’s just another competition. As the final event in the World Cup series, Kirov promises to be the showcase of the year’s finest talent and the fastest competitors.
Extreme Sports Tournaments: The X Games – Do we need to say more?
If you love all things extreme sports, we don’t need to say much in terms of the X Games. Bringing together passion, action and music into an exciting, adrenaline fueled competition, professionals from around the world in various categories compete against each other for the gold, silver and bronze medals. Hosted by media sports group ESPN since it’s inception in 1995, the X Games are literally the Olympics for extreme sports.
There are two versions of the X Games: the summer event and the winter event. Among the extreme sports disciplines in summer are kateboarding, BMX, freestyle motocross, scootering, and motorsports. The winter version competes in snowboarding, skiing and snowcross. Both events are held in different locations cross the planet. Known for a fabulous atmosphere, athletes interacting with fans, and commodity, it’s the best of the best that the extreme sports’ world has to offer.
Extreme Sports Tournaments: Race Across America – USA
While cycling is often thought of as more of a hobby or form of exercise, an extreme sport is not generally regarded as the definition of cycling. But faced with the facts of Race Across America, it’s impossible to deny the “extremeness” of this competition. In less than 9 days, participants cycle over 3,000 miles across 12 states, starting in California and ending in Maryland – about 250-350 miles a day!
Including both professional cycles and amateurs alike, they race the same route every year. Drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators in various areas, this test of endurance is one of the most extreme competitions in the world.
Extreme Sports Tournaments: O Marisquiño – Spain
Since it’s inception in 2001, O Marisquiño has become one of the most prominent action sports competition and festival in all of Europe. Drawing more than 160,000 people for three days of all things extreme sports, graffiti exhibitions, cultural events, break-dance, concerts, and so much more.
Located in the Maritime Port of the city of Vigo, this event hosts not one, but three world cups: the World Cup Skateboarding Street, the World Cup Skateboarding Miniramp and the Dirt FMB World Tour, where the best national and international riders meet.
Extreme Sports Tournaments: The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing
Considered to be one of the biggest surfing competitions in the world, The Vans Triple Crown are really three competitions in one event.
Taking place in the late fall on Oahu’s North Shore in Hawaii, it consists of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Alii Beach Park, and the Billabong Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline. Fans and athletes alike love this set up. As each event features drastically different mega waves that literally take the surfing world by storm. It’s massive, it’s epic, it’s incredible, and only the strongest athletes with the ability to adapt complete for the glory.
Extreme Sports Tournaments: Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series
Today, Red Bull’s name is synonymous with extreme sports. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, established in 2009, in an intense international series of cliff diving events held around the world. With an artistic flair added into each diver’s jumps, it’s a spectacular show of athletic prowess.
Cultivating with the year-end final, fans and athletes alike travel around Europe with stops in Italy, Bosnia, Switzerland, Norway, France as we as the USA and Australia, this global sport’s competition takes Cliff diving to another level.
