The Best Spanish Spots to go Kitesurfing

If you love the sea, wind, culture, that shot of adrenaline and an array of fine wine and exotic foods, then a summer of kite surfing on the coast of Spain is calling your name. The coast of Spain is lined with countless beaches and coves where you can practice or learn this exciting sport, in an exciting destination!

Why is Spain the “it” Destination?

If our intro above didn’t get you on board for this dream kitesurfing destination, let’s dig a little deeper. The wind blows nearly all year round, creating perfect and near-perfect kitesurfing conditions. Add in mild temperature, your Spanish winters, summers and every time in between creates the perfect storm for kitesurfing.

These perfect conditions lead into our next point: Spain is a hub of kitesurfing enthusiasts. Particularly, Tarifa, in Cádiz, has become an internationally renowned location of all things kitesurfing, and is host to several world trials every year. Gisela Pulido, a  ten-time world champion and one of the leading international figures of this sport, is often seen practicing kitesurfing on the coasts. If you want to be the best, emulate the best.

Where Should You Kitesurf in Spain?

The Atlantic coast is your answer. To narrow that down,  coasts located within Andalusia, the Mediterranean Sea and Fuerteventura are the best in Spain, and some of the best in the world.

Tarifa, South Andalusia Cadiz

Close by the Strait of Gibraltar, Tarifa is one of the best known Spanish beaches as it creates the perfect conditions for epic kitesurfing. It’s also the most renowned kitesurfing spots in Europe, which makes it one of the busiest beaches. The best time is between May and October. However since kitesurfers share the shore with other water sport enthusiasts, some beaches are separated into designated areas for kitesurfers and other activities.

If you are going to be kitesurfing in Spain, you’ll need to understand the types of wind that is there and how that can affect your kitesurfing. There are two types of wind that blows on the coast: One is the Levante, and the other is The Poniente.

  • The Levante is most common between April and October, and is described as a strong, dry, and warm wind that blows from the east offshore. It’s known for being wild and strong, to the point where relaxing on the beach can be extreme. It’s strong season is in June and July in Tarifa, and is the absolute best time for kitesurfing.

  • The Poniente on the other hand is a wind that blows side-onshore from the west  and is considered to be a humid, cool, gentle, wind. It;s the most common wind in Tarifa, and it often produces small to medium-sized waves that are great for all kitesurfers.

Fuerteventura

The Canary Islands are another popular kitesurfing destination, with Fuerteventura hosting several locations perfect for all skill levels. Costa Calma in southern Fuerteventura is the best known location, with near perfect winds all year. With charming hotels located just five minutes away for kitesurfing paradise, this area is a perfect location for a vibrant and daring summer adventure.

Golf de Roses

The Golf de Roses is a bay in Spain. You know what that means—the location and winds make it a top ten kitesurfing spot for thrill seeking adventures. And the area alone is worth the trip. It has old castles, forts, picturesque large farms. You will also find old stone buildings and long bright beaches with seaside villages dotting the coastline. Add in the amazing kitesurfing landscape, and you’ll never want to leave!

These areas all have one thing in common—they are meccas for kitesurfing from across the world. With many different kitesurfing schools located in the surrounding areas, don’t be concerned if you have not kitesurfed before. It’s  best if you learn from skilled instructors, and you’ll definite find the perfect school and instructor that will help you to take your first steps in the sport.

What You Should Know Before Kitesurfing in Spain

Before booking your flight and traveling to live out your kite surfing dreams, you should understand the full picture of kitesurfing on the coastal beaches of Spain.

Make Sure it’s Allowed

Make sure you are only practicing kitesurfing at beaches that are suitable for water sports, as there are countless beaches that offer many activities and some are much better for kite surfing than others. During the most crowded times, namely on weekends in the summer, some beaches are closed off to kite surfing. A rule of thumb is not to kitesurf without at least 500 feet between you and other swimmers or other obstacles that could be a danger for you or others.

Newbies Need Schooling

Don’t be dumb—if you are new to the sport and never kite surfed before, you’ll have your choice of kite schools to learn form, which usually cover the basics in 2-3 days…never go out to the sea without a more experienced kitesurfer if you don’t know how to control the kite perfectly.

Don’t Kitesurf Alone

In case you didn’t get the message above—don’t practice kitesurfing on your own. Unless you are an experienced kitesurfer,  you should always go with someone in case you run into a problem or need help.

No to Storms & Rain

Storms and rain are a big no. You should never trust offshore wind as it can be unpredictable and could drag you towards cliffs, breakwaters, rocks and other dangerous and life-threatening locations.

Check With Your Insurance

Yeah, we know—boring. But if you are kitesurfing on your own, checking your insurance and making sure you are covered if you should get injured during your kitesurfing adventure is well worth being on hold for a few minutes. Given that the recommendations and regulations may change, you want to know exactly what you are getting into.

Kite surfing has been described as a meditative experience—because when you kitesurf, there’s no other place you’d rather be. It feels larger than life, an athlete traveling the world, catching the waves and the wind. Spain is one of the best locations in the world for kitesurfing, and if you are ready for a summer of a lifetime, what are you waiting for?
