Sea Kayaking to Baily Lighthouse, Dublin
If you decide to go sea kayaking on Dublin’s shoreline to the historic Baily Lighthouse, you will see incredible views of Ireland’s history and nature. There are some notable sites along the way such as Martello tower, a coastal tower built in the 19th century, and other species of birds such as cormorants, terns, and seagulls will come alongside you on the way. You might even see a seal or two!
The historic Baily Lighthouse stands on a rocky promontory and is perched over Dublin Bay, and is 134 feet above sea level. What makes this a truly special location is that this is the spot where Vikings boarded their ships for the last time after the Norman invasion in 1177. There’s no better way to experience this feeling of being right in their footsteps than paddle boarding in the same waters!
Quad biking
A quad bike ride is the perfect autumn or winter adventure sport. It’s noisy, muddy, rough fun where man and machine battle nature in the form of streams, ditches, hills, bridges, and other natural and man made obstacles. It allows riders to challenge friends in races and obstacle courses, or just going high speed through the fields and lands by the Irish coasts.
If you’re not afraid to get dirty and want a cool-as-hell experience, Quad biking in Ireland is just for you.
Rock Climbing
Doolin in County Clare is recognized as one of the top locations for rock climbing, and it’s easy to see why the activity is one of the most popular sports within Ireland. With an endless array of coastal cliffs, mountain summits, peaks, and vistas, it is no wonder why.
While Doolin is already a must stop on your Irish tour due to its roots in art, music, culture and heritage that are encouraged by the community, it boats some of the best backdrops for rock climbing – as well some challenging climbs! Climbing the sea climbs is a fun, challenging and unique activity, and the Irish setting really sets the scene.
Zorbing
Sound futuristic? We still are almost convinced a time traveler brought this sport from the future to our time. New Zealand’s Zorbing, also known as orbing or sphering, is a high-octane downhill sport where participants are encased in a giant transparent plastic orb before they are rolled at speed down a slope.
Non-harnessed orbs are the equivalent of a team sport, carrying up to three people, while harnessed orbs are for individuals seeking the crazy thrill of rattling down a slope inside an oversized see-through ball. Bubble soccer, a zorbing variation that is gaining steam, is where you wear the upper half of a zorb while still being able to use your legs to kick or chase a football. It’s become a popular activity in the country…for better or worse.
Aqua zorbing involves rolling a zorb on water and walking, or more likely, rolling, on the water while being nice and dry inside. Ultimately, zorbing brings out the child in all of us, whether you prefer being on land or water.
Assault Courses/Adventure Races
Want to experience a mash-up of extreme sports, military-style obstacles, team building and extreme physical endurance? Welcome to the world of assault courses, also known as adventure races.
With muddy obstacle courses, ziplines, and military-style obstacles, an assault course can offer a substantial physical challenge. Even more, an assault course can offer a considerable mental challenge. Multiple adventure races and mud runs have started in Ireland recently, for those who would prefer an all-around physical and mental workout that provides so much more then just a gym workout or mountain biking ride!
Competitors get muddy and tackle an array of obstacles at races like Tough Mudder, MuckFest, and Toughest Muckers. A team sport for the most part, the active camaraderie on offer can make this obstacle course style of racing refreshing.
