From skydiving, freediving, flyboarding and rock climbing, everything you need to know about the best places to try these adventures out can be found right here!
Freediving by Gozo Island
Extreme sports are available across the globe, but do you have what it takes? Perhaps you should test your abilities with freediving, a unique form of underwater diving that will allow you to fully immerse your mind and body in the Mediterranean Sea. Diving without an air tank or any other scuba diving gear means you’ll need to learn to hold your breath for as long as you can until you need to resurface.Â
Free diving is as extreme as it gets, with athletes training by swimming to the bottom of shallow areas in the sea, holding onto a weight, and then swimming back to the surface. It takes a special type of person to entertain the idea of partaking in this sport, let alone actually doing it. And if you decide to become an athlete and pursue this as a way of life? Instant legend status.Â

Windsurfing in Malta is ideal for windsurfers of all levels, from beginners on flat calm waters to more experienced competitors in challenging areas. At the opposite end of the island, in Marsascala, Mellieha Bay and St. Thomas Bay offer similar and yet varied conditions.
Ghallet Marku is, without a doubt, one of the most famous spots for windsurfing in Malta. This location is along the northern coastline between Salina and Mellieha, and you can count on favorable winds on this beach nearly all year round…so expect to see plenty of windsurfers at any time!
Stand-up Paddle Boarding in Malta
Stand-up paddle boarding is always an adventurous activity anywhere in the world, but when experiencing it off the coast of Malta, it’s hands down a thrilling experience. If you share a combined love of the sea and adventure, this activity is perfect for you. There are several locations in Malta that offer a spectacular exploration:
The Mellieha Bay: This trip will start from Mellieha Bay (Ghadira Beach) and end at Coral Cave. Along the way, you will be paddling beside the amazing Mellieha cliff, and once you reach, Slug’s Bay, (it’s much cooler than it sounds) you’ll be able to take a break and swim in the clear water. After that, you’ll head towards the Ahrax tal-Mellieha cliffs, and you’ll pass by some small caves on the way that can be explored.
The Golden Bay: Your tour starts from Golden Bay Beach and heads towards Riviera Bay, passing through Gnejna Bay and the sandy and clay beaches of Gnejna. After that, you will travel to Ta Maria Cave, where you can take a short break and swim. This breathtaking tour can either be done in the early morning or at sunset – we’d recommend the latter as there are some epic sunsets in Malta!
The St Thomas Bay: From the sandy beaches, you’ll head out to open waters, and be in for quite a delightful trip. You’ll be passing over a reef, and legend has it that this is the location of St Paul’s shipwreck…perhaps this would be an incentive to learn free diving, so you can dive and explore?
Flyboarding in Birkirkara, Malta
Now so much more than just a hobby, the Flyboard® market launch in 2008 evolved into a sport in its own right. The organization of the first Flyboard® World Cup in Qatar 2012 was a landmark event for the sport. It has been held every year since 2014, propelling the Flyboard® and the Hoverboard by ZR® to become one of the world’s top hydro sports brands.
Flyboarding takes some of the physical traits of a variety of sports such as jet skiing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, skiing, snowboarding, acrobatic diving and combines them into one. Unlike many of those other sports, flyboarding is more intuitive, similar to learning to walk. The training has no restrictions as to what a person’s fitness level might be, and it takes about an hour or so of practice with an instructor to find your balance and start moving around on your own.
While standing upright on the Flyboard in the water, you simply need to straighten your posture and lock your knees as the instructor throttles forward, allowing you to fly straight up. As soon as you are in the air, you can relax and enjoy the ride. After some practice, you’ll feel like Iron Man, flying through the water and air by the power of hydro fight.
Whatever your passions are, you can bet Malta offers something that catches your eye. It’s unlike anything else when you travel the world and add that spice of adventure to your travels by seeking out some of the most extreme and adrenaline pumping activities out there – go WIDE OPEN in your pursuit of the extreme!
